Mattress Buyer's Guide - Shopping Tips

  1. Take your partner. When buying for two, both of you should make the decision.

  2. Wear comfortable clothes for lying down (pants are a good idea) and shoes you can easily remove.

  3. Lie down and relax for awhile. You can’t judge support and comfort by sitting on an edge or lying down for a few seconds. Don’t be shy. Lie on you side – are your hips and shoulders comfortable? Try it with your partner – will you be fighting for space?

  4. Get the whole story. Study all of the available information, read the labeling and insist that the salesperson tell you about product features. If you have any doubts, request the salesperson to write down the product’s components.

  5. Shop at a store you know and trust to give you good information, good service, and top quality products.

  6. Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. You can always find “bargain bedding” at rock bottom prices, but it’s no bargain when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Buy the best you can afford.

  7. Some ads offer a free frame or delivery. Nothing is free. “Free” items are included in the price of a product.

  8. If you need a frame, make sure you get a good one. A good frame has 2” wide wheels and must have a center support for queen and king mattresses. A center support is also recommended for full size beds. If the frame is substandard it is not a bargain whether free or at any price.

  9. If you can, buy a complete set. The mattress and box spring are designed to work together. A real working box spring acts as a shock absorber to help the mattress last longer and to provide more consistent support.
